The Thanisch family has cultivated wine continuously since the year 1636 and can look back on a history covering more than 375 years. Today the estate is run as a family business in the 12th generation and managed by Sofia Thanisch, the fourth woman in charge of the estate, one very classy lady and part owner of the world renowned “Doctor” vineyard that has the distinction of being valued as the highest unit price per acre of any agricultural land in Germany. The first woman leading the estate was Katharina Thanisch, who was one of the VDP (Association of Prädikatsweingüter Germany) founding members in 1910. The label is a very Classic Art Nouveau Etiquette from 1901 and depicts the estate, the town of Bernkastel and the vineyards in the background. The size of the estate is modest with the vineyard parcels lying along a stretch of the Mosel which is relatively straight, a run of steep south-facing vineyards of world renown. There is magic within the Mosel, a combination of soil, aspect, reflections from the river and the slate soil combine to create perfect concentration and layered complexity in the wines.
