When looking out for new grapes to try, we were excited to stumble upon a bottle or Robola from Kefalonia in Greece from Gentilini Rhombus.

We were expecting a warm climate white wine with this one, and while somewhat riper in fruit characteristics, this one was surprisingly restrained for being Greek- so much so that we had not known any better we would've compared it with a Riesling from the USA or select places in northern Europe!

Refreshing White Robola

Rhombus Robola

This Greek Robola was pale gold in color with medium aromas of lemon, lime, pear, peach skin, peach ring candy, grapefruit, petrol, yellow apple, wet stone, beeswax, honeysuckle, blossom, and toast.

On the palate, it was dry with medium(+) acidity and flavor intensity and medium alcohol, body, and finish. We had notes of lemon, lemon curd, lime, pineapple, grapefruit, nectarine, wet stone, beeswax, and toast.

This one definitely felt like it was more aromatic than flavorful, as many of the robust mineral notes on the aromas were less present in the flavor instead favoring tart citrus that had a lovely curd flavor. If you would've served this one to us blind, we really would've thought it on par with a Riesling characteristically.

Robola Food Pairing – Japanese Rice Bowl

Robola Food Pairing - Japanese rice bowl

We paired this wine with a Japanese rice bowl with seared pork belly and pickled vegetables. Originally, we hoped that the minerality in the wine would be stronger to pair with the flavorful food; however, the high acidity and tart notes held on here with spikes in candied lemon, pear, and green apple candy to name a few (particularly with the pork belly). Some of the vegetables did cause a spice in tropical notes and prominent petrol characteristics, too.

Score: 3 / 5

We'd buy a glass of this one.

Overall, while we did think this wine would be a bit riper and more indicative of a warmer climate, we were pleasantly surprised by this bottle and really enjoyed its characteristics. As such, we'd be happy to have a glass again.

Gentilini Rhombus is located at Minies 281 00 in Kefalonia, Greece. We purchased this bottle on Wine.com and enjoyed it in 2025.
