One of our favorite things about trying new grape varietals, is we have found some new favorite grapes.
Arneis from Piedmont is one such grape. While not the most obscure that we've tried, this gem has become a regular in our rotation and for good reason- flavor and texture often come together for a delicious pour.
Vietti's Roero Arneis was one such bottle, and while this one trended a bit more citrus on the palate, it still delivered everything we look for in this grape.
An Array of Flavors and Texture in Vietti Roero Arneis
This Arneis from Piedmont was pale gold in color with medium aromas of lemon, lime, pear, yellow apple, white blossom, toast, beeswax, grapefruit, peach skin, and slight creme brulee notes.
On the palate, it was dry with high acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium(+) body, flavor intensity, and finish. We had more citrus-forward notes here with lemon and lime being dominant plus pear, wet stone, beeswax, toast, white blossom, pineapple, and grapefruit.
One of the reasons we love Arneis is that it often comes with a bit of texture, present alongside the beeswax characteristics, and we quite enjoyed it in this one here- although it was notably much lighter on the palate than comparable aromas.
Arneis Food Pairing – Leek and Potato Gratin
We paired this Arneis with a cream-forward leek and potato gratin as we thought the textural notes would work nicely with a rich and creamy dish. The gratin itself helped a lot of nice pineapple and phenolic notes pop while reigning in some of the lemon and lime citrus notes that we appreciated.
Brussels sprouts on the side highlighted more citrus, which was a bit of a downside, but we did notice more phenolic texture as well, which we will take all the same.
Score 3.5 / 5
We'd buy a glass of this one and another bottle with the right pairing.
As always, Arneis delivers in a beautiful glass of wine. Although this one trended a bit more towards the citrus flavors on the palate more than we'd like, it was an enjoyable glass all around. We'd always say yes to a glass, and a bottle with a great food pairing.
Vietti is located at Piazza Vittorio Veneto 5, Castiglione Falletto, in Piedmont. At the time of publishing, a different vintage of this bottle was available on Wine.com.
