If you've read our wine reviews for a while, we generally always like to say don't sleep on Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc. Yes, we adore the GSM blends of the traditional red Chateauneuf du Pape, but the white blends are always quite the surprise and are regulars in our drinking collection.
Brotte's Les Hauts Barville Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc, and is one of those bottles that disappears quickly.
Ripe Flavors in Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc
This Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc was pale lemon in color with medium aromas of yellow apple, pear, wet stone, toast, grapefruit, pineapple, slate, marmalade, beeswax, and perhaps a slightly reductive note as well.
On the palate, it was dry with medium acidity, alcohol, body, flavor intensity, and medium(-) finish. We had flavors of lemon, lime, pear, wet stone, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, toast, and beeswax.
One of the things we love about these blends is that they often have great texture, with a nice phenolic note and minerality that pairs well with the often riper fruit notes. While we would say this one had that more on the aromas than the palate, it was still an easy drinker that was enjoyable.
Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Pairing – Vegetable Strata
We paired this white southern Rhone blend with a vegetable strata as we thought the richness from an egg-forward dish would go nicely with a riper white wine with minerality.
As expected, we got a pop of peach and pear notes on this one, and enhanced textural notes with undertones of floral characteristics that we did not identify when tasting on its own. Although this wine could also hold up to richer dishes, we thought it was a nice pairing all the same.
Score 2.5 / 5
We're okay on this one but would take a glass with the right pairing.
Admittedly, this bottle was perhaps not the most intense Chateaneuf du Pape Blanc we've ever had, as the medium flavor intensity and medium(-) finish let us wanting just a bit more intensity. Still, we've never really had a bottle of this style we haven't enjoyed, and while we're okay on this one, we'd be happy with a glass with the right food pairing too.
Brotte is located at Avenue Pierre de Luxembourg, 84230 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France. We purchased this bottle on Wine.com and enjoyed it in 2025.
