We always love a good bottle of Gruner Veltliner from Austria, as they can range from easy-drinking to complex and, regardless of style, typically pair rather nicely with a wide array of food choices.

Weingut Nigl Freiheit Gruner Veltliner was one such bottle, and while we wanted a bit more complexity out of this one, it went nicely with our dinner all the same.

Fruit Forward Gruner Veltliner

Weingut Nigl Freiheit Gruner Veltliner

This Austrian Gruner Veltliner was pale lemon in color with medium aromas of lemon, candied peach, pear, yellow apple, white blossom, saline, and wet stone.

On the palate, it was dry with medium characteristics across the board (acidity, alcohol, body, flavor intensity, and finish) with notes of lemon, lime, pineapple, grapefruit, beeswax, wet stone, pear, peach, white blossom, and saline.

This one was an interesting Gruner Veltliner if only because the aromas were fruit dominant, whereas the palate had slightly more complex fruit notes (pineapple and grapefruit in particular) and slight phenolic development as well. It, admittedly, was a bit lighter in intensity than we normally prefer in this style of wine, but was well balanced all the same.

Gruner Veltliner Food Pairing – Bean and Escarole Soup

Gruner Veltliner Food Pairing - Bean and Escarole Soup

We paired this Gruner Veltliner with a bean and escarole soup with beef broth and tomato as we thought the aromatic soup would pair nicely with mineral and phenolic notes typically found in this wine.

Although these were nominal notes when drinking the wine on its own, we appreciated how there was more of a pop of peach and phenolic characteristics with this food pairing. In a way, this dish elevated the wine substantially to bring out the characteristics we thought were somewhat lacking when sipping on its own, which we fully appreciated.

Score: 2.5 / 5

We're okay on this one but would buy a glass with a good food pairing.

Overall, while we personally enjoy Gruner Veltliners with a bit more oomph in the mineral and beeswax flavors, we did appreciate this one for how well it paired with our meal. As such, we'd definitely consider another glass with a good food pairing.

Weingut Nigl is located at Kirchenberg 1 in Senftenberg, Austria. We received this bottle in our Picked by Wine.com subscription and enjoyed it in 2026.
