If you’re into wine, odds are good you know that Bordeaux’s Pomerol region is known for being one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, with wines carrying a premium well beyond what many would find attractive.

But this iconic region has a bit more approachable neighbor next door, Lalande de Pomerol, which is known for high quality wines (which still come in at a decent premium) but often without the super premium markup that the name allows.

So when we stumbled upon a 10 year old bottle from Chateau La Fleur de Bouard for a fairly reasonable price, all things considered at least, we jumped on it to see what Pomerol’s neighbor has to offer. This Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend (with a little Cabernet Sauvignon) certainly hit us with classic Bordeaux notes!

A Solid Bordeaux Blend for a Decent Price

Lalande de Pomerol

This Lalande de Pomerol was medium ruby in color with medium aromas of dried black cherry, cranberry, dried leaves, vanilla, tobacco, leather, bramble, and clove.

On the palate, it was dry with medium acidity, body, and flavor intensity as well as high acidity and medium(+) coarse tannin and finish. We had notes of black cherry, dried cranberry, leather, tobacco, cedar, dried leaves, forest floor, and cassis.

This one hit all the hallmark notes of a Bordeaux blend, although perhaps was a bit less complex than we otherwise would’ve hoped. Still, for its price and age, we quite enjoyed this one for what it is.

Lalande de Pomerol Food Pairing – Bacon Wrapped Filet

Bordeaux Food Pairing - Filet

We paired this robust red from Bordeaux with bacon wrapped filets as well as a side of carrots with herbs.

The steak itself helped highlight more dark fruit notes like blueberry and blackberry that we otherwise did not notice in the wine, while the leather and dried leaf notes were minimized which we appreciated. The herbed carrots, on the other hand, highlighted more red fruit notes with a slight astringency that we found a bit unpleasant.

So in this respect, go for a meat pairing, but we’d probably be a bit careful on the side choice all the same.

Score: 3 / 5

We’d buy a glass of this one.

Overall, this one was perhaps not as intense nor complex as others we’ve had from nearby Pomerol proper, but all the hallmark characteristics were there all the same. For that, we could always take a glass of this one if it was available.

Chateau La Fleur de Bouard is located at 12 Bertineau, 33500 Néac in Lalande de Pomerol, France. We purchased this wine locally and enjoyed it in 2026.
