We’re used to seeing collaborations amongst the beer scene, where brewers get together to create a product that is representative of their respective brands and styles. But we aren’t used to seeing the same phenomenon happen with wine.
That is to say, until we tried Tierce in the Finger Lakes.
This bottle is a unique collaboration between Anthony Road, Red Newt, and Fox Run which incorporates Riesling grapes from multiple locations within the Finger Lakes. Even better? Older vintages are often readily available, making for a great option to try something just a bit different from your traditional Finger Lakes Riesling.
Tierce is a Collaboration Riesling in the Finger Lakes
This collaboration Riesling was medium gold in color with medium(+) aromas of yellow apple, pear, petrol, grapefruit, geranium, clove, wet stone, creme brulee, and golden raising.
On the palate, it was dry with medium(+) acidity, body, and flavor intensity as well as medium alcohol and finish. We had notes of pear, yellow apple, grapefruit, honeysuckle, wet stone, pineapple, lemon, toast, white blossom, and peach skin.
All told, this has many great hallmarks of a nice, aged Riesling; however at nearly 11 years old we do wonder if the perceived acidity is starting to drop-off ever-so-slightly. That said, given that this one is packaged with a screw top and not a cork, we can also we it holding in the bottle for quite some time, too. (We are eager to crack open into another bottle we have in a few years to see if anything has changed significantly!)
Riesling Food Pairing – Leek Tart with Pear Salad
We paired this Riesling with a creamy leek tart and a salad topped with pear and a tangy vinaigrette. We thought the creaminess and onion-forward characteristics of the tart could be a nice counterpoint for an aged Riesling, and felt the pairing made the wine turn into a pear bomb with more peach skin notes that we enjoyed.
The salad, having pear as a topping, masked these notes a bit and highlighted more simple citrus like lemon as well as tropical notes like pineapple and grapefruit. The combination of the two was fun to see how different flavors express in the wine by masking a dominant note depending on the base food.
Score 4 / 5
We’d buy another bottle of this one.
Overall, this had many hallmarks of a delicious, aged Riesling from the Finger Lakes and was a rather fun one to stop and appreciate how different winemakers came together to make the bottle. We picked up more of this one (from this vintage and others) on a more recent trip to the region and are looking forward to seeing how they are soon!
Tierce is a collaboration Riesling amongst three Finger Lakes wineries. We purchased this bottle locally and enjoyed it in 2026. On a recent trip, Red Newt had many bottles from various vintages available.
