It isn't every day we get bottles of wine from Hungary, and when we saw Pannonhalmi's Tricollis with a blend of Riesling, Welschriesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Blanc, we were in to try it.
This one hits all of the hallmark characteristics of each grape, all while being Riesling dominant!
An Easy Drinking Hungarian White Blend
This Hungarian white blend was pale gold in color with medium aromas of pear, yellow apple, peach ring candy, wet stone, white blossom, honeydew, grapefruit, flint, and a light waxy note.
On the palate, it was dry with high acidity and medium characteristics across the board- medium alcohol, body, flavor intensity, and finish. We had slightly less ripe notes than the aromas with lemon, lime, pear, wet stone, beeswax, white blossom, elderflower, green apple, and saline present.
This one definitely had all the hallmark characteristics of a lovely Riesling, but with some nice floral undertones and minerality to go along with it.
Hungarian White Food Pairing – Celeriac and Potato Cream Soup
We paired this Hungarian white with a rich celeriac and potato cream soup, which helped highlight some more of the underlying stone fruit notes in the wine and also expressed a slightly more textural phenolic note as well. A decent pairing all around!
Score: 2.5 / 5
We're okay on this one but would take a glass with the right food pairing.
Overall, this Hungarian white blend was quite interesting with Riesling characteristics and floral plus mineral undertones. Although we perhaps would've liked slightly stronger concentration of flavors, it was a nice bottle, and we'd take a glass with the right food pairing like the meal we had.
Pannonhalmi is located in Pannonhalma, Hungary. We purchased this bottle locally and enjoyed it in 2025.
