Oh, Madeira- you are such a cool island.
Out of all of the places we've been to, Madeira is among the most magical. From stellar views, great food, to incredible wine, and more, there really is a lot to love about this island.
So if you are planning a visit, particularly to go wine tasting, you may wonder, where is the best place to stay in Maderia?
We've got you covered in this one!
Wineries Are All Centrally Located in Madeira
One of the best parts about wine tasting in Madeira is that virtually all the major wineries are located within a small, 30-minute or so driving radius of Funchal.
This doesn't cover 100% of the wineries on the island, like the still wine producer Barbusano, which is located further north near Sao Vicente, but it does cover most of the major fortified Madeira producers that you'll likely want to visit.
Three major wineries are located inside Funchal proper- Blandy's, HM Borges, and D'Oliveiras (noting that Justino's was building a tasting room there as well during our 2026 visit), and can all be accessed on foot when in town. Slightly to the west, Henriques & Henriques is located in the heart of Camara de Lobos (walkable if you're staying near Baia de Camara de Lobos), and Barbeito is just a 10 or so minute drive up the hill as well.
As such, if you're prioritizing wine on your visit, either staying in Funchal or near Baia de Camara de Lobos can make for a great location. The former if you want to walk to some wineries (which may be a good idea given the fortification levels) and the latter if you want to stay in a charming town while still being close by to all the action, including walking distance to H&H (we did this and do not regret it in the slightest).
If You Want to Hike, Go North
Now, while Madeira may be among the easiest of wine regions to look at the map and plan where to stay, thanks to the easy ability to drive around and hit all the top spots, we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about the island at large, as you may want to do some hiking while visiting as well.
For the best hikes, we believe you really need to go to the northern coast of the island, as many of the most famous treks on the island are located along this coast. While not too far of a drive from Funchal or Camara de Lobos, we admit, if you are planning for early wakeups for sunrise hikes (or just to beat the parking traffic), staying a bit closer in the north can have a benefit to cut the drive times down from upwards of an hour to twenty to thirty minutes.
In this sense, hiking on Madeira and wine tasting in Madeira are directly at odds with each other as the best spots are on opposite sides of the island. Are you going to get up for sunrise and do a 5-6 hour hike, finish, then drive 45 to 60 minutes for a late afternoon wine tasting in Funchal? You can, but we can also see how that could get tricky, depending on your hiking speed.
As such, we split our trip into four days staying in the north near Sao Vicente and four days staying in Camara de Lobos, while keeping our hiking and wine activities distinctly separated. This worked out well for us, but also only hit the mark because we had a sufficient amount of time on the island to begin with.
In any case, if hiking is of interest to you in addition to wine (as it should be), consider splitting your time or just be prepared for slightly longer driving times all the same.
Overall, Madeira is a pretty easy island to plan a trip around for visiting the wineries; however, given that you may also want to enjoy other experiences, like hiking, you may want to consider adding more time and splitting your stay in the south (for wine) and the north (for hiking). We did, and we highly recommend it!
