I've been fortunate to visit Porto several times now, and every time we visit, we always make it our mission to check out some of the best Port wine houses in Vila Nova di Gaia- just opposite Porto across the Douro River.
Although wine is (typically) not made in Vila Nova di Gaia, its history is an interesting one for maturation and export. Historically, many Douro Valley wineries would bring barrels of wine down the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia for aging and bottling, as the Douro Valley was, until very recently (thanks to modern air conditioning), not suitable for maturing wines.
This led to a large chunk of Vila Nova di Gaia being converted to massive warehouses to house thousands upon thousands of barrels of wine, and, thanks to the advantage of being just a bit upriver from the ocean, also allowed for port access for exports around the world!
Today, many of the most famous wineries in the region have Port houses in Vila Nova di Gaia, and there are several you shouldn't miss when visiting Porto!
Kopke Port House
On the surface, Kopke Port House looks to be one of the smallest Port houses in Vila Nova di Gaia. But do not be fooled- while this one does not have aging on-site and is only open for tastings, it makes up for it by being the oldest producer of Port and one of the highest-quality producers, too!
Although Kopke has many styles of Port available to try, their specialty is their Colheita tawny ports- bottles produced with grapes from a single vintage and aged in oak barrels for many years/decades. This makes it a lot of fun to try different years, as well as any milestone years that may have special significance to you, like your birth year (if available).
When visiting Kopke, if you are feeling a bit of a splurge, we highly recommend purchasing their famed Decades Flight. This one will feature several pours of Colheita bottles over several decades, in roughly 10-year increments, and really lets you see how tawny wines mature while also figuring out which age indications you like best.
For me, this was instrumental in helping me realize that I really prefer tawny ports in the 20- to 30-year age range, and 40+ years are often a bit too mature for my liking.
That said, if you are interested in buying bottles at Kopke, we have also had great experiences walking in and being offered a quick taste before making a purchase.
Kopke Port House is located at Avenida Diogo Leite 312. Tastings are available for walk-ins; however, we recommend visiting early as the bar is quite small.
Graham's
If there is a Port producer whose name you may already be familiar with, it is Graham's. This is one of the larger producers in the area and exports many bottles worldwide, including to the United States.
While we would consider this to be a large producer, it should be at the top of most visitor's lists for a number of reasons, namely, Graham's offers one of the finest Port house tours in Vila Nova di Gaia, their premium tours with the Vintage Room tastings sample some truly incredible aged wines, and the views from the lodge itself are among the best in all of Vila Nova di Gaia!
Much like Kopke, if you're in the mood for a splurge, taking the premium tour at Graham's should not be overlooked. But even if you visit for an entry-level tasting, do not worry- the tour is among the very best in the area and worth making the trek up the hill for the visit.
Graham's is located at Rua do Agro 141. Book tours in advance.
Caves Burmester
Caves Burmester is another Port producer in Vila Nova de Gaia that we would recommend visiting for a tour and tasting.
A tour through the cellars here gives a great look into the maturation of Port wine, and its unique location next to the Ponte Luiz I Bridge gives an entry ambiance unlike any other. As soon as you cross the bridge on the lower level at Vila Nova di Gaia, you're right there at Burmester!
Apart from this, Burmester is a more cost-effective tasting option from entry-level to premium tastings; however, many wines here trend towards White Port, Late Bottle Vintage, or Tawny over perhaps the slightly more premium Colheita and Vintage ports you may find elsewhere.
Caves Burmester is located at Largo Ponte Luiz I. Book tours in advance.
Fonseca
If you're looking for a place you can visit for a bit of a museum experience alongside a tasting, but do not want to make an advanced reservation, look no further than Fonseca. This winery in Vila Nova de Gaia offers self-guided tours of its on-site museum and aging spaces, featuring museum-level installations with photos and artifacts to showcase the history of winemaking in the region, plus barrels currently aging younger wines.
Whereas other tours feel like you are going deep into the production facilities, this one feels a bit more curated on the museum side of things, while being tastefully done and able to be explored in a short period of time and for a reasonable price point.
This entry-level tasting ended with samples of a white port, ruby port, and their famous BIN 27 Reserve ruby port, which, admittedly, I found quite enjoyable for its reasonable price point. So if you're in the mood for a cost-effective tasting with a museum-like experience, don't overlook Fonseca!
Fonseca is located at Rua do Choupelo 84. Self-guided tours of the museum were available for walk-ins during our visit.
Ramos Pinto
Ramos Pinto is one of those Port houses that has something for everyone. Want to take a tour and tasting? They offer that. Want to pop by and try a flight of premium pours? You can do that too.
Although we would've liked to have toured Ramos Pinto, we visited this one for the Expert wine tasting with a mix of 30 Year Tawny Port, 20 Year White Ports (an extra pour offered by our server), Vintage Ports, an LBV, and so much more.
This is the kind of flight that we love to try at Port houses, as we get to work our way through premium bottles in an array of styles. As other producers tend to group their tastings into a single vertical, like premium tawny or Vintage, it was nice to get a broad look at the higher-end offerings at a single winery, all the same. Don't skip that 30 Year Tawny or 20 Year White- they were both beautiful!
We liked this tasting so much that we will plan on doing a tour on our next trip to Porto- it was that good!
Ramos Pinto is located at Avenida Ramos Pinto 380. Tours should be booked in advance; however, tastings were also available for walk-ins during our visit.
Quinta do Noval
If you are looking for another larger producer with a tasting room in Vila Nova di Gaia that offers walk-in pours, be sure to stop at Quinta do Noval!
Our lineup included five Port wines, with an emphasis on white Port, ruby Port, LBV ruby, and tawny. These came with a nice introduction from our server while allowing us to sit back and enjoy our sips while watching the foot traffic in Vila Nova di Gaia go by.
If you're in need of an extra tasting without having to schedule a tour or committing a longer time, Quitna do Noval is a great option right along the Douro River!
Quinta do Noval is located at Avenida Diogo Leite 256. Tastings were available for walk-ins during our visit.
Caves Ferreira
Caves Ferreira is another winery located in Vila Nova di Gaia that had an incredible tour, focusing on the history of winemaking in Porto and how one of the early owners, Dona Antonia Adeleide Ferreira, was instrumental in expanding the local wine trade. We'll let you learn that history more when you visit, but if you know the story of Madame Clicquot in Champagne, you'll find a number of similar parallels in Dona Antonia Ferreira.
During my visit, I booked a premium Vintage tasting, which departed on its own scheduled tour time, and I ended up getting a private tour all to myself, which I appreciated (the entry-level tour that departed before me was, naturally, quite full). After the tour of their beautiful facility, I was given a tasting that consisted of their 20 Year Tawny, a 2021 LBV, and 2017 and 2022 Vintage Ports.
This tour was quite insightful as I could really tell the differences in aromas and flavors between the two Vintage ports, more so than I normally would've expected, with the 2022 having stronger floral and cassis characteristics, while the 2017 was a bit more developed with dried fruits that I preferred. Their 20 Year Tawny Port also stood out as being one of my favorites in that age indication, and I am looking forward to picking up a bottle at home in the future.
Caves Ferreira is located at Avenida Ramos Pinto, 70. Book tours in advance.
