We don’t get our hands on bottles of Scheurebe all too often, as this cross of Riesling and Bukettrebe is not grown too widely and, by extension, sometimes difficult to find on the export market. (Case in point, we got this bottle via our Picked by Wine.com subscription and, in checking their inventory, we have tried both of their two bottles available at the time of publication.)

Naturally, we were quite excited to give this one a go and we were quite surprised how much this white wine from Pfalz reminded us of a delicious Sauvignon Blanc!

Reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc

Muller-Catoir Scheurebe

This Scheurebe from Pfalz was pale leomon in color with medium aromas of pear, yellow apple, pineapple, grapefruit, saline, wet stone, toast, white blossom, grass, and peach. If you would’ve told me this was a Sauvignon Blanc, I absolutely would’ve believed it based on the aroma alone.

On the palate, it was dry with high acidity, medium alcohol, body, and flavor intensity, plus a medium(+) finish. We had notes of lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, beeswax, quince, wet stone, white blossom, pear, and yellow apple to name a few.

Although this one had a lot of hallmarks for what we would equate to a Sauvignon Blanc, the simpler flavors were quite enjoyable with a subtle complexity from some minerality and floral characteristics thrown in.

Scheurebe Food Pairing – Sausage, Cabbage, and Beets

Scheurebe Food Pairing - Sausage and Cabbage

We went for a classic German pairing of grilled sausage (with French onion filling), creamy cooked cabbage, and beets. The sausage itself was rich in its own right for the French onion flavors and some gouda also being inside the casing and brought out more candied apricot and peach notes in the wine.

The beets and cabbage highlighted more of the original wine flavors and brought out citrus and tropical notes much like we had when drinking the wine on its own.

Score: 2.5 / 5

We’re okay on this one but could have a glass in the right pairing.

Overall, this was an easy drinking wine starting to showcase some complexity with light minerality and floral notes as mentioned above. We normally want a bit more complexity in wine when drinking, and as such we are okay on this one; however, we’d happily consider a glass with the right food pairing.

Muller-Catoir is located at Mandelring 25 Haardt 67433 Neustadt an der Weinstraße in Pfalz, Germany. We received this bottle in our Picked by Wine.com delivery and enjoyed it in 2026.
