Every January, we try and do a refresh and take some time off from drinking alcohol.
But, as we still enjoy good flavor, we take this time to try some non-alcoholic wines and see how the industry is progressing. Oddbird has a rather delicious Blanc de Blancs worth trying and, while perhaps not quite a perfect substitute for a fine wine, it is getting there!
A Respectable NA Sparkling Wine
This non-alcoholic sparkling Blanc de Blancs was pale lemon in color with medium aromas of lemon, pear, white blossom, nectarine, wet stone, toast, grapefruit, quince, and yellow apple.
On the palate, it was medium-dry with medium(+) acidity, delicate mousse, no alcohol, plus a medium body, flavor intensity, and finish. We had notes of yellow apple, pear, peach skin, lemon, wet stone, nectarine, and honeysuckle.
Historically, we've found most NA wines to have an off-putting, almost juicy element to them (like grape juice, apple juice, etc.). Although we noticed this here, however so slightly we admit, we must say that this dealcoholized Blanc de Blancs is really showing how NA wines are improving with each passing year. We wouldn't say it could go toe-to-toe with a fine traditional method wine, but a reasonable Prosecco? Well, we could see it.
NA Sparkling Wine Food Pairing – Moo Shu Pork
We paired this one with homemade Moo Shu Pork and bok choy. We thought the right and mushroom-centric Moo Shu flavors would pair nicely with the sparkling wine. Although we didn't note much in terms of flavor change with the pairing, the flavors held well and the acid added a nice contrast- a good pleaser for what it is.
Score: 4 / 5
We'd buy another bottle of this one for Dry January.
Normally, our ranking scores are set up under the idea of whether we'd buy another glass or another bottle. In this specific instance, primarily because we do not drink NA wines by default, we have to look at this one through the lens of Dry January or other periods of time when we may be abstaining.
In this scenario, we absolutely would consider a bottle like this one, which is to show that NA sparkling wine can be, to be completely honest, pretty good. So if we are ever in the mood for an NA bubbly, we'd pick this one up again.
Oddbird is located in Languedoc-Roussillon. We purchased this bottle locally and enjoyed it in 2026.
