We've been loving Armenian wine more and more, and always seem to pick up a bottle when we can find them. At one of our favorite local bottle shops, we were recommended to try an Areni Rose from Shofer.

A varietal bottle with some great rose characteristics from a grape we can't try all too often? We were in, and this one was quite delicious.

Strong Rose Flavors in Shofer Areni Rose

Shofer Areni Rose

This rose of Areni was pale pink in color with medium aromas of red cherry, watermelon, raspberry, wet stone, saline, watermelon rind, slightly herbal notes like thyme, and beeswax.

On the palate, this rose was dry with medium(+) acidity, body, and finish plus medium alcohol and flavor intensity. We had notes of dried red cherry, raspberry, watermelon, black pepper, beeswax, candied lemon, wet stone, violet, saline, and strawberry.

Rose Areni Food Pairing – Indian Chickpea and Paneer

Areni Rose Food Pairing - Indian Chickpea and Paneer

We paired this rose of Areni with Indian chickpeas and homemade paneer. The chickpeas brought out more strawberry and watermelon with less minerality, while the paneer brought out more mineral and phenolic notes that we quite enjoyed.

As such, this is one of those bottles you may want to pair with two or three intense and contrasting flavors just to see what happens in the wine!

Score: 4 / 5

We'd buy another bottle of this one.

Overall, we really enjoyed this rose of Areni by Shofer. It had a decent flavor intensity with an array of complex flavors that we enjoyed. This all came together for a wine that was quite versatile and went with many strong dishes. We'd gladly buy another!

Shofer is located in Vayots Dzor, Armenia. We purchased this bottle locally and enjoyed it in 2025.
