One thing I am a sucker for at wine shops is a recommendation of a bottle from a knowledgeable sales rep. Oh, you like that for [insert reasons here]? Say less.
This is how we discovered Ascheri Barolo which came with glowing reviews and, perhaps more importantly, a rather reasonable price point- an instant sale was had.
Although we do admit we wanted a bit more from this one, we can't overlook its excellent price point for those who want something a bit more intense than a Langhe Nebbiolo and perhaps a little less intense than more robust Barolo you may be used to.
Ascheri Barolo Offers Middle of the Road Characteristics
This Nebbiolo was pale garnet in color with medium aromas of red cherry, leather, clove, tobacco, violet, blueberry, dried cranberry, raspberry, and blackberry.
On the palate, it was dry with high acidity and alcohol, medium(+) smooth tannin and flavor intensity, and a medium body and finish. We had notes of red cherry, black cherry, wet leaves, clove, blueberry, violet, leather, and cedar.
This was had rather characteristic flavors of Nebbiolo all around, and at about five years of age was only just starting to show some signs of age on the palate. This one could likely use a bit more time before it truly sings, but we do admit we were hoping for just a bit more intensity all around.
Nebbiolo Food Pairing – Lamb Stuffed Peppers
We paired this lighter Nebbiolo with lamb stuffed peppers as we thought the richness of ground lamb would work well for this slightly more robust wine (plus carrots and a cucumber salad on the side).
The lamb itself was an umami bomb which cut through the tannin nicely and highlighted some prominent red fruit, whereas carrots with feta helped showcase some velvetly dark fruits like blueberry, which we have to admit we almost appreciated more than the lamb!
Score: 2.5 / 5
We're okay on this one but would buy a glass in the right situation.
In a way, this one reminded us more of a Langhe Nebbiolo style as opposed to a powerful Barolo that we were hoping for. If you find yourself somewhere in the middle preference-wise, this would be an excellent bottle to try. But as we prefer fuller Barolo over the Langhe counterpart, this one trended in that direction just a bit too much for our liking. As such, we're okay on this one, but would be open to a glass in the right context- particularly with a bit of age.
Ascheri is located at Via G. Piumati, 25, 12042 Bra (CN) – Italy. We purchased this bottle locally and enjoyed it in 2025.
