If you've read a lot of our wine reviews, you may have figured out that we haven't really gotten into Burgundy wines just yet, if only because they are quite expensive in the USA.

But whenever we receive one in a wine box, like our Picked by Wine.com subscription, we get excited to try another. Les Hauts Pruliers Nuits St George was one such bottle, and we cracked it open right away.

Although this one is on the expensive side, it made for a rather nice bottle all the same.

Classic Burgundy Pinot from Nuits St George

Nuits St George Pinot

This Burgundy Pinot Noir was pale ruby in color with medium aromas of red cherry, licorice, cola, raspberry, blackberry, clove, cedar, forest floor, blueberry, and perhaps a bit of anise, too.

On the palate, it was dry with medium acidity, smooth tannin, body, flavor intensity, and finish as well as high alcohol. We had flavors of red cherry, cranberry, clove, cedar, leather, tobacco, forest floor, blueberry, and cola.

This one was classic Burgundy Pinot all the way and was a rather nice wine all around; however, we did think that the intensity could've been a bit more prominent given the high alcohol all the same.

Burgundy Food Pairing – Ratatouille

Pinot Food Pairing - Ratatouille

We paired this Burgundy Pinot Noir with the classic French dish, Ratatouille, as we thought a lighter French red would go nicely wit the dish (despite being effectively just vegetables).

This one brought out stronger Earthy and woody notes in the wine, like more forest floor, wet leaves, cedar, and the like. Although we personally enjoyed this pairing, we could see how some of those elements could be off-putting since these are typically more minor notes in a Burgundy- so we could see an alternative pairing being a better option.

Score: 3 / 5

We'd buy a glass of this one.

Overall, this is a pretty representative bottle for a solid Burgundy. It has all the hallmark flavors we come to expect from the region; however, we would've appreciated a bit more intensity all arounds given the high alcohol (and the bottle price). But we'd always be up for a glass of this one!

Domaine Esmonin is located in Burgundy, France. We received this one in our Picked by Wine.com subscription and enjoyed it in 2026.
