Turbiana is quickly becoming one of our favorite lesser-known white grapes as this Lugana native always delivers with an impressive flavor profile, a bit of texture, and more.
Tommasi's Le Fornaci Lugana follows in this path nicely. While perhaps a bit lighter in flavor intensity than others we've had in the region, this one showcases why we are falling in love with this unique grape!
A Refreshing White from Lugana
This Turbiana from Lugana was medium lemon in color with medium aromas of peach, pear, nectarine, grapefruit, white blossom, peach skin, and saline.
On the palate, it was dry with medium(+) acidity and body, medium alcohol and flavor intensity, and a long finish. We had notes of lemon, pear, peach, wet stone, white blossom, slate, pineapple, grapefruit, and saline.
We love a Turbiana because the flavors always seem to hang on for a long finish, and some light texture on this one really helped elevate the flavors nicely. There is a reason why we always grab a bottle of this grape when we see it, and so far we have yet to be let down.
Turbiana Food Pairing – Fish and Zucchini Pancakes
We paired this Turbiana with seared halibut and zucchini pancakes with tomato jam. The fish helped elevate the peach and textural notes of this wine significantly, while the sweet tomato jam on the zucchini pancake toned things down with more citrus notes like lemon and lime.
While we would not pair this one with any elements containing sweetness, it held up to the fish and was quite nice all the same.
Score: 3 / 5
We'd buy a glass of this one.
Overall, Tommasi's Lugana is a beautiful bottle of Turbiana and hits all the right notes we like. While we've had some other bottles from the region that have greater intensity, we'd never say no to a glass of this lovely grape whenever we see it.
Tommasi is located at Via Ronchetto 4, in Pedemonte, IT 37029. We purchased this bottle on Wine.com and enjoyed it in 2024.
