Before a recent trip to explore more Finger Lakes wineries, we decided to crack open one of our older Riesling bottles from one of our favorite producers- Boundary Breaks!

This bottle, their #90 Extra Dry, had been in our cellar for nearly a decade, and we were curious to see how the 2017 vintage was shaping up in 2026.

If we were going to the source to buy more, well, it felt like a good opportunity, and all we have to say is this one aged beautifully!

A Beautiful Finger Lakes Riesling With a Bit of Age

Boundary Breaks #90 Extra Dry

This Finger Lakes Riesling was pale lemon in color with medium aromas of pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, almond, green apple, wet stone, geranium, peach skin, petrol, and pear.

On the palate, it was dry with medium(+) acidity, flavor intensity, and finish, as well as medium alcohol and body. We had flavors of candied pineapple, pear, wet stone, petrol, white blossom, lemon, green apple, and a waxy, almost oily finish.

As far as nine-year-old Rieslings are concerned, this one was evolving quite nicely. We could see this one going a few more years; however, we also noted the acidity seemed to be dropping slightly, so this one was drinking quite nicely for us as is, and we were glad we opened it when we did.

Riesling Food Pairing – Sake Cured Salmon with Miso Eggplant

Riesling Food Pairing - Sake Cured Salmon

We paired this aged Riesling with sake and salt-cured salmon with a miso-broiled eggplant as a side. The salmon itself brought out more phenolic textural notes in the wine as well as a boost in grapefruit and lemon flavors. The miso eggplant was, admittedly, perhaps a better pairing here, as we got a wealth of pear notes in addition to a pop of citrus that we appreciated.

Score: 4 / 5

We'd buy another bottle of this one.

As always, we adore a delicious Boundary Breaks Riesling, but this was also the first bottle we had opened with some sufficient age in our cellar, and we were quite pleased with how it had progressed with nine years of age. So not only would we buy another bottle of this one, we'd happily forget about it for a while to gain some complexity, too!

Boundary Breaks is located at 1568 Porter Covert Rd in Lodi, NY. We purchased this bottle at the winery and enjoyed it in 2026.
