We've read about Pol Roger Reserve Champagne for many years, and it is always one of those bottles we put off buying due to a slightly higher price point than we'd normally prefer.
When we finally decided to grab one of these, we wondered why it took us so long. Yes, the price can be fairly high, but it is also a rather delicious bottle of sparkling wine!
Pol Roger is A Flavorful Reserve Champagne
This Champagne was pale gold in color with medium aromas of pear, yellow apple, toast, cream, yogurt, red raspberry, watermelon rind, plum, lemon, and wet stone.
On the palate, it was dry with high acidity, medium alcohol and finish, medium(+) body and flavor intensity, and a creamy mousse. We had notes similar to the nose, albeit a bit riper, including lemon, yellow apple, pear, grapefruit, pineapple, white strawberry, watermelon rind, saline, and toast.
One thing about this bottle that we enjoyed is that it is a blend of the three most common grapes in Champagne production, and has a bit more flavor intensity, particularly in the strawberry and watermelon notes, due to red grapes being included in the blend. While this sometimes softens a bottle, they held up nicely with this one in most all respects- pretty tasty, we have to say!
Champagne Food Pairing – Salvadoran Pupusas
We paired this wine with a Salvadoran pupusa as we thought the concentrated lees notes would work well with the masa flavor in particular. Our pupusas were made with a fresh blue corn masa, which helped bring out more lees notes like brown butter, creme brulee, and toast. Yes, we said what we said.
Truly, if we're being honest, food with corn masa and a strong traditional method Champagne is a great pairing, especially if the wine has strong lees notes, and we look forward to trying more of this duo in the future.
Score: 3.5 / 5
We'd buy a glass of this one and a bottle in the right circumstances.
Overall, this was a really delicious bottle of Champagne and, for the meal, a delightful pairing. The only hesitation we have in giving it a full score of four (we'd buy another bottle) is primarily that this one can be quite expensive, especially in the USA. Would we always want a glass? Absolutely. Would we buy a bottle again? Sure, if we thought the price was right!
Pol Roger is located at 1, Rue Winston Churchill 51200 Epernay France. We purchased this bottle on Wine.com and enjoyed it in 2025.
